How Common Is Heart Disease In Children

1,75, 000 children are born in India every year with congenital heart disease. They are added to the existing pool of children with the heart diseases between the ages 0-18 years. Out of these, 30% need surgery in the first year or else they will not see their first birthday. Only about 15,000 heart surgeries are done on children every year in India. Heart Disease is the commonest birth defect in children. It occurs in 1 in 100 children. It is also the most common birth defect missed most commonly in utero evaluation by ultrasound. As compared to these statistics, science has advanced to a point where heart surgery in children over the board has a mortality of around or less than 5%. But there is only limited support available from Government in the case of children with heart diseases. General cost associated with the treatment of heart disease is around 2 lacs which is a huge amount for a poor family. Most of the time young parents who have just started their life find themselves helpless to save their loving children. Therefore, in order to provide the benefits of heart treatment to poor children or for saving the life of poor children, we established Child Heart Foundation. Most of the Congenital Birth Defects can be surgically corrected and cured and the patient lead to normal healthy life. There is general perception that the children with congenital heart disease may not survive, which is not true as the survival rate post-surgery/treatment increases to 95%.
